DMTCO2 Storage in in situ Converted Coal Seams
The continuous decrease of coal production and envisaged phasing-out of subsidized hard coal mining reveals the management and possible utilization of unmined coal seams as major task in Germany and world-wide. Substantial benefits can be gained from a system which provides economical and environmentally friendly energy supply combined with reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. more

A conceptual design of an economic and environment-friendly UCG-CCS technology will be conducted within the first step of this project. This is followed by the gasification of coal samples under ex-situ conditions and detailed analyses of the gasification residues and their surrounding rock. Furthermore, the CO2 storage potentials of the gasified coal samples and their surround rock will be investigated. This will also involve the calculation of UCG-CCS economics. more

The aim of this project is the evaluation of a low emission power plant based on utilization of synthetic gas from in-situ coal conversion with emphasis on free-gas and adsorptive CO2 storage in the resulting gasified coal seams. Within this evaluation, economical and environmental aspects of CO2 storage in gasified coal seams will be considered with regard to operational costs, environmental protection and CO2 storage security. more
